Genesis
PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, CMERI, Durgapur came into existence to serve the educational needs of the children of employees of the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) and other central government establishments in and around Durgapur.
The school began functioning in 1971 within the CMERI campus at Durgapur, under the aegis of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Located about 10 km from Durgapur Bus Stand and Railway Station, the school started as a single‑section institution and has since grown into a full‑fledged co‑educational day school offering education from Class I to Class XII under the CBSE curriculum, with Science and Humanities streams at the senior secondary level.
Over the decades, the vidyalaya has remained an integral part of the CMERI residential colony, providing quality, uniform education primarily to the wards of CMERI employees while also admitting students from other central government and local communities in line with KVS norms.
Today, as a PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, it continues to build on this legacy, aligning with national initiatives to strengthen school education while retaining its original mission of accessible, high‑quality schooling in the heart of Durgapur.
